I grew up near Mitchell Field (Mineola, LI), as kids we would watch the
procession of prop planes and with some help from AF veteran Dads could
identify the plane by the prop noise.
But there was nothing like jets. We would be on the ball field and BOOM
BOOM, a fighter would break the sound barrier, it was great.
Unfortunately the grownups objected to the sound and the broken windows.
Mitchell Field closed in 1960.
