[Hallicrafters] SX 28 S meter

I have not fired up my recently purchsed SX 28. Have
been looking at the S meter and the glass seems to
obscure the movement of the meter to the extent that
you can't tell that it is an S meter. 

What can you tell me about the S meter in the SX 28
and is it unusual for the meter to be difficult to see
behind the meter face?

I may try to fire the receiver up tomorrow. Thanks and
