In numerous repairs and restorations, I've found that the connection between
the rotor shaft of variable capacitors and the body of the variable is poor.
I use a very small drop of CRAMOLIN (no longer available), which is a
contact cleaner and enhancer, somewhat akin to sewing-machine oil, at these
points  These days, it's available as DeOxit (thinner).  It improves the
connections at the front, back, and spring wipers, and quite often totally
restores operation of non-operating receivers AND transmitters.  Just a
thought
