[Hallicrafters] S-27 rectifier

I believe the correct rectifier tube in the S-27 is a
5Z3, which has a 4-pin base like the 80 but handles a
lot more current. How were you able to stick a 5U4 in
there? Was the socket replaced?

If so, here is a possibility. Check the socket for
connections that were not soldered, or cold soldered.

I mention this because --

Just today, I almost panicked because a radio I was
testing after a recapping "just stopped working." It
would not power up, even though just ten minutes
before it had worked perfectly. I started measuring
resistances, checking continuity through the power
cord, switch etc and it looked for all the world like
the transformer primary was open. But when I looked
closer, lo and behold, there was a lead wrapped around
a terminal on the transformer -- LOOSELY wrapped --
that had NEVER been soldered. DUMB mistake! Easy fix,
but it sure had me scared.
