[Hallicrafters] R-96

Instead of all this conjecture all one has to do is look at the photos
on the auction. (Yes, Duane, I said a dirty word.) One of them is
clearly a Signal Corps data plate giving the nomenclature as "R-96 A/SR"
(with a space, but I suspect that to be an error in manufacturing the
plate) and a serial number of 123. It wasn't intended to be a
"moral(sic) receiver" since it doesn't tune MW. IIRC, it was for
shipboard use. It's an uncommon radio but hardly truly rare. I should
think it to be a technical step or two above an R-100/URR.

There are already some pix of an R-96A/SR on the Hallicrafters web site.
In fact, it appears to be this very radio. The picture of the data
plate isn't entirely clear but it certainly looks like the same S/N,
123. The main tuning knob is now different - and I'm wondering if
either is correct - and the marvels of poor digital photography don't
allow a good paint comparison, but I think it's the same radio. Perhaps
the powers that be can confirm, if there's a photo credit on the site.
