My guess is that R stands for Receiver in mil-speak. I have one ea.
R-649 and later A model, Halli-made Coast Guard/Treasury Dept.
receivers. Heavy duty steel case, AC/DC set, weighs a lot. Looks a bit
like the SX-73 in light gray paint but is a totally different radio
inside. Truly scarce compared to even the SX-88, they are an
interesting, but not terribly exciting piece of gear.

In fact, I'd rather have my SX-28A and a decent SX-73/R-274 anyday
over the above two radios. IMHO, the SX-28 is a much nicer looking
radio than the SX-88 with equal-or-better audio output. SX-73 is a lot
more radio than the R-649, lacking only the LF coverage but making up
for it in many other ways.
