Naaaa......old radios need old insulation.
It's ok to pack it loosely in and around the xtals because you don't
want to get them TOO hot!
You might want to contact the person who gave you that rig and have them
check to see if there is some more Halliscratchers in the corner of the
shed. Likely you can get some more of that insulation for the rest of
this radio.
Gotta keep em' warm on them cold nights don't'cha know?

Wow! Thanks Dave ... in that case I'm glad I didn't discard it! I really
thought it was a nest :-)

The odd thing is, it wasn't actually around the crystal itself, it was
positioned just below the crystal oscillator tube (which, unlike
the other tubes, has a ceramic socket).

Is it a good idea to replace it with a more modern material?
