Hi Carl,
I noted the same effect during the contact with the
VE1. A couple of guys 30 and 55 miles from me worked
him after I signed with him. I could hear them but
not the VE1. And they told me later that they heard
me but not the VE1, until the duct or whatever it was
moved to their areas.
On another occasion I was monitoring 146.94 about 3 pm
one summer afternoon and heard a carrier, with a CW ID
from a repeater. It was in Tulsa, OK. I was in
eastern NC. I heard the repeater on the next two
successive days, about the same time of day; but never
again.
Another strange occurance happened on 2 meter AM,
about five years earlier. One night I was to call the
county RACES net on 145.35. At the appointed hour I
tuned up the rig and called, called, called....
nothing. But, suddenly my receiver was quieted by a
very strong carrier, and the voice calling me signed
with a K8 call. He gave his QTH as Cleveland OH. I
was in rural eastern NC. You could have knocked me
over with a feather. I talked to the guy for a good
half hour and signed with him.... then happened to
notice something strange about the rig. I was loaded
into my 40-meter inverted Vee, with its apex about 30
feet above my 2-meter horizontal omni antenna. I
reconnected the proper antenna, and WHOOM! Here was
the local RACES net in full swing, on the same
frequency 145.35, with the substitute NCS bad-mouthing
me for not showing up. I broke in, asked if anyone
had heard me working the K8. No one had heard either
of us. No one believed me until I showed up at the
club meeting a month later with a QSL confirming the
contact.
I haven't ever come up with a satisfactory explanation
for that one!
