[Hallicrafters] Rare DX

Back in the 70's I was listening to 146.55 in South Central CT and could
hear a couple of mobiles discussing where in a city they were.

Since my QTH was a good 30 miles ore so from any city, and I was only using
a vertical my ears perked up. They had a deep southern drawl so after awhile
I broke in and it turns out they were mobile in Atlanta Ga. There were
several other locals who monitored .55 in those day and they worked them
too. But what was interesting was we could not hear them all at once. So
when my friend 5 miles away was working them. I could not hear these guys
and vice versa
The 4s were as shocked as we were and the DX never extended elsewhere. We
all QSLd and unless these guys were the best actors around it was a real
strange occurrence.

One of my friends received one of the first 1x2 N4
calls some years ago when he lived in Florida. He
says that for a while all he had to do was call CQ on
20 or 15 and a humongous pile-up resulted... stateside
guys calling him!

Duh....

Let's not forget some other amusing True Tales of the
Golden RadioDaze. Like, the person who checked into a
2-meter AM net one night signing as Aeronautical
Mobile... bouncing his signal, from a 4-element quad,
off a giant municipal water tank a block away so no
one could get a bearing on him with their own beams...
and slowly swinging the beam through about 45 degrees
either side of the direction of the tank to simulate
QSB as the "aircraft" changed direction....

I have no idea who that was.

But, I do know that late one summer afternoon when I
was working 2 meter FM simplex with a friend about ten
miles away in his mobile, and we were broken-in on by
VE1PS in Nova Scotia (a LOOOOOONNNnnnnngg way from NC)
neither of us really believed it.... until we both
received QSL cards from VE1PS.
