With these old radios, once you acknowledge the fact that they don't hear as
well as the newer stuff and you decide that you MUST improve the situation,
you only have two choices after all the R/C changing and alignment is done.
#1. Make lots of mods which may be difficult to reverse, changing to newer
type tubes etc., or #2. Forget the butchering and put a decent pre-amp ahead
of it. Even one of the old Ameco boxes will make a drastic improvement to
an SX-28 or SX-16 on the higher bands. That way, the effort is minimal, the
improvement is predictable and the radio stays production line stock.
