Good Grief! I never heard soldering put to such an art form. Buy a
SOLDER-SUCKER... they used to be called a Solda-Pullit and various other
names, but we just called 'em solder-suckers. Heat the terminal - suck the
old solder out - work out the wire lead, and it's real purtee n' clean
[sic]. Stick the new lead in and make it shiney with the old 60/40 and a
HOT iron.
Now - that old wive's tale about how you have to wrap the wire around the
pin, terminal, or whatever so that you could hold up a '58 Buick with it is
a bunch of hooey. Tektronix, during their tube years, NEVER DID THAT.
That's why it's so easy to take old Tektronix scope apart for parts, as the
leads just come STRAIGHT OUT of the socket pins. With repairs, let your
good sense be your guide.... that's still available, isn't it?
Oh... on painting holes.... it's really tough to evenly coat the edges of
the holes inside... just kidding. Practice on some ordinary window screen
(preferably OUT of the window). When you can paint the screen without
filling the holes - you're ready for cabinets. See... simple.
