[Hallicrafters] Oscillating SX-16

I just bought this radio over the 'Net as a working radio. It exhibits a
high-pitched oscillation squeal and is anything but in working condition. No
signals come through on any band. Before I raise a stink with the seller, I was
wondering if anyone had any ideas on simple things to check out.

Here is some more info:

1. The pitch does not diminish if I turn down either the RF gain or AF gain
controls.

2.  I tried stage isolation by removing tubes to see which tube's removal ended
the squealing. It continued, however, with the removal of each tube. The only
way I could stop it was to remove both tubes in the push-pull AF.

3. Most of the tubes are metal. The two glass tubes are shielded and the shields
are properly grounded.
