[Hallicrafters] HELP - The coil slug is stuck!

I'd really appreciate any experience-based (preferably successful, :>) suggestions as to how to "unstick" a iron slug that is inside one of the rf alignment slug-tuned coils of my HT-32A.  During alignment, I was able to initially move it a half turn or so and then it froze up. I'm afraid that if I force it, the slug will crack. What do ya use to "lubricate" the slug exterior (or its cardboard tube) that won't swell it or turn it to mush? Tnx, Bill, wd0x
