Changing the filter condensers is much "easier" done than replacing that transformer! I always test the can first- but more often than not, I find myself replacing all the electrolytic caps anyway.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] S40 Advice please

I have mostly finished my re-capping of the S40, and a quick check shows
the radio to be operating okay, although I have done no real testing on
it yet. AS I am new to this, I value the advice of others, so here goes:

Would you replace the filter caps, even if you don't hear any hum?

Could someone describe to me what the BFO coupling in the s40 should
look like, The manual describes it as a "gimmick"...what I see is a
short piece of hookup wire making one loop over the lead going to pin 4
of the detector tube. I find that I have to turn the RF gain down a lot
to properly copy most CW.

Thanks again for all of your help.

Brent
