Hallicrafters little secret
Dave, you have just re-discovered one of Hallicrafters' little marketing
secrets. The S-40 circuit actually started, I believe as an S-20R, which
became the S-40,S-40A & S-40B, which became the S-85 & SX-99, then the
S-108, which evolved into the SX-129 & SX-130 with a few tube changes.
Look at the front panel control layout and you'll see a surprising
similiarity. Hallicrafters was using metal octal tubes in production way
into the 1960's long after others had converted to 7 & 9 pin miniatures as
early as 1950.
