The S-40 series was a decent beginning receiver for 80 and 40 but not for
15. My first receiver was an S-40B that I got just before I received my
novice in 1956. It did hear well on the all band trap antenna out of QST.
I tried working stations on 15 when I got my novice and when you turned it
over you just hoped you could find them again. I found a nice S-85 a few
years ago and its basically the S-40 reborn. I remember tuning in a 20
meter CW signal all over the 1800 degrees of bandspread calibration.

I just hope most realize that there is a division between collecting the old
S-40's (S-38's even more)
and trying to use them to work stations. Now the S-85 was good enough to
stay tuned to 3885 AM but on 10 CW the drift was terrible (after finally
tuning them in).

For our on the air stations stick with the SX-100 or 101 or better yet the
SX-115.
