Yup. Just be careful of the type of timer. If it's solid state it *may*
have a triac instead of the relay.

Most dimmer switches are terrible for hash, but there are probably some that
work well. I just haven't found one yet.

In my shop I have 11 eight foot fixtures for a total of 22 eight foot
unshielded tubes.
I do not notice any noise from them on any band, or haven't yet. I end up
replacing them about once every year and a half...or so. I figure it
averages out at roughtly $40 a year for the 8' 40W tubes. I do purchase them
by the case and save almost half. I really like the "full spectrum" but I
don't get the case discount and they are, as I recall, about three times as
much as the regular as well as having lower light output. I normally select
the highest lumen for the watts used. I'm far more concerned with suficient
light than lamp life as long as it's reasonable.

I use the smaller, "so called" energy saving tubes (coils) in lamps and in
the garage. I think they are not available up to 120 or 150 watt
incandescent "equivelants.

Unlike the claims, I do not fine their equivelant to be my equivelant when
it comes to light output.
I have to go to at least two sized larger to get the same output as they
claim. OTOH the power is still considerably less than incandescents for the
same lumen output.

I also find that they do not do well in cold garage or hangar when first
turned on. After about 5 to 10 minutes they do come up to full briliance. So
when out at the airport this time of year I go turn on the hangar lights,
then head to the terminal for some hangar flying. Besides, it's warm in
there and the hangar is unheated. OTOH the Deb has a good heater.
