Tom, and others:
In the last two issues of Electric Radio mag there are two parts of an
excellent multi-part article on restoring the SX-101 in which the AVC
problem is addressed in great detail.
Hallicrafters engineers made a mistake in where and how the AGC
voltage is connected: first, they connected it to the mixer, which causes
the oscillator to pull on strong signals, and secondly did NOT connect it
to the RF amp stages, which contributes to overload.
The article also addresses the "S" meter zero problem, among many
others.
IMHO, it is "must" reading for anyone who wishes to get the most out of
the truly excellent SX-101.
You can read about it at www.ermag.com. You can also subscribe
there, or buy back and current issues.
