Hi Craig,
I agree with some of your sentiments.
Hallicrafters could have used better corrosion protection on the chassis.
Maybe also a form of paint that sticks to the metal better on the boxes and
panels.
Possibly a different type of chassis identifying panel instead of the
stick-on paper ones that disintegrate after 30 years.
Some of the dials could have used better silk screening.
I think that on the whole the Hallicrafters sets are of good quality
electronically.
I have other brands such as Eddystone, Kinglsey (AR7), STC, Trio
(LaFayette) and Yaesu in my collection but not had to spend anywhere near
the amount of time on them in restoring the "aesthetic" appearance of those
brands of receiver.
I think the Hallicrafters either don't keep well or don't store well in some
environments. The ones I come across on Australia are normally very corroded
and in poor condition, it may be the hot dry climate and red dust that kills
them over here.
I would be interested to hear how they fend in similar climates in the USA.
I am constantly amazed by some of the pictures I see of unrestored Hallis on
the WWW from the USA, I am surprised how well they have fended off the
years. I've never seen a pristine unrestored Hallicrafters in more than 35
years of SWLing and seeking out radio gear in Australia.
Enthusiasts, please dont take this to heart, it's only based on my personal
observations.
Regards
Peter
