Hi Bill,
I am a restorer of vintage ham gear. I have brought many back to
life because someone else had the replacement part. I guess that it
comes to a point in the life of an old rig that has sat in a barn,
gotten rusted, corroded, parts removed for other home brew projects, and
left in such a condition that it would take more money and time than most
of us have left on this earth to restore, that they become parts rigs. I
currently have parts for sale from such an SX-42. I have not listed them
on an auction site, and won't do so. I have listed them on Boatanchors
Classifieds and the HCI site. I do this to be able to help others find
those parts they need. I agree that some folks think that the sum of the
parts to a "probably" good radio are worth more than the whole; and
really don't care to spend the time to bring it back to life. My final
thought is that the ones that will take the time are us that are 60+
years old and see the importance of keeping them alive, the younger
generation know nothing about tubes, how to read a schematic, or how to
solder! And they have other "more important" things to do with the time
it requires.
