FWIW... I just fixed up an SX-71 with a similar problem. The radio tended to
get unstable if i spun the main tuning knob rapidly on the higher bands,
then it would slowly settle down after the knob stopped spinning. So I
replaced the perished rubber washers under the feet of the main tuning gang,
using the white gum rubber washers obtainable from AES. This did the trick.
Hope this helps...
Cant help re paint colour at this stage...

Subject: [Hallicrafters] SX-100
Am starting restoration on a SX-100 Mark I. The set is very microphonic and
no "one" tube seems to be the culprit. Comments?
There are scratches around the top and sides of the front panel but the
panel itself is fine. Any suggestions, including paint brand/color, for
redoing the top and edges
I plan to replace all paper caps except those black beauties associated
with the Selectivity switching circuit
Thanks Joe k7mks
