Hi Buzz,

My SX-15(ME) has the same magic eye escutheon as shown on the SX-10 on
LA5KI's page which you referenced. It has the same mounting screws too, which makes
the case of an OEM installation on some SX-15s more than valid in my opinion,
also.

It turns out that I have a pair of SX-15s, one with the eye and the other
without. The wiers thing is that I bought the plain jane '15 on a whim at a
local hamfest and when I got it home, I discovered that I already had one and
thought someone had made a really neat modification. As I mentioned before, this
was, i thought, a mod, since there was a slight difference in the distance
from the dial between the eye and bandspread escutheons. I was going to sell the
SX-15(ME) since I thought it had beed modded and I only want unblemished recei
vers in my collection. Boy, am I ever glad that I never got around to it!

Now the question is, how do we find out if this is really a fact or possibly
Hallicrafters or someone else came out with a DIY mod kit? Possibly someone
out there knows an old Hallicrafters engineer who may know the answer. I have
been through all the old catalogs I have and everything pictured is a plane
jane and there is no reference to an eye kit being available. A second question
is that if Hallicrafters did turn out some SX-15s with an eye, how many did
they produce and why didn't they advertise them? Wierd!

I have to reference this to the SX-71s that had white dial faces instead of
the original black one. I only have one ad showing a white face model and am
fortunate enough to have both examples.

Thanks for the time you spent researching this situation and I know you will
keep us posted if anything turns up.

John, W4AWM
