They served to help keep the oscillator components
"warm" so that the receiver didn't drift as bad when
first turned on.  The SX-111 series also has one of
these that is mounted in the oscillator portion of the
receiver.

I have found a number of these that have gone bad
while others seem to keep on "ticking"!
