Hi Wayne,
Congrats on your sale. Congrats also on doing such a nice restoration. You put a lot of
work into it. Was I surprised at the final price? Yes. Do I think an SX-100 is worth
$1125? Not to me. A gun is not held to the head of an auction buyer. The buyer is (or
should be) in total control over what they do or spend. Obviously, the buyer thought the
receiver was worth it. I suspect that some who desire to own an SX-100 might be
concerned that this sale might affect the price of future offerings. Although the sale of
one receiver probably won't have a great impact, I suppose it will at least have some.
Kind of like comps in the housing market. Just like the auction process, that's quite fair
in my mind even if it leads to disappointments. Hey, those disapointments can work both
ways.
I bought most of my boatanchors between 1997 and 2003. Some of the stuff I bought
has appreciated quite nicely in the relatively short time I've owned them. That's cool but
that's not why I bought them. There are Collins items I'd like to own but I probably never
will because the market has already determined that they are so darned desirable.
Guess I'll have to do without that 51J-4.
I also have an SX-100 Mark 2 that is almost as nice as yours. I'm curious as to how you
got the chassis and IF cans looking so good. Scotch Brite pads & sore fingers? Also,
what was your method for changing the capacitors on the selectivity switch?
I haven't "gone through" my SX-100 yet, so I don't know if is at peak performance.
Regardless, I'm very happy with it. It's a keeper.

> Hey guys...Just so you know, that was my SX-100 on ebay that went for $1100+. I was certainly pleased with the price. However, when I got out the calculator and figured the price I paid for the original non-restored receiver, the shipping to get it to me and the many dozens of hours I spent restoring it...I made $8.34 an hour. Not bad! But my day job pays considerably more.
