[Hallicrafters] SX-110 capacitors

The paper capacitors in all of the older receivers
usually are suspect. These range from the wax type to
the plastic types. The values of these capacitors can
be as low as 0.001 mfd and up to at least 0.500 mfd if
not larger.

Replacement with "orange drops" available from Mouser
and other sources is a good idea even if the set
doesn't seem to have any problems. Often replacing
the capacitors makes a good receiver even better.
Paper capacitors seem to start going bad from the day
that they are made.

Of course there are those capacitors that don't seem
to have any problems. But, the vast majority of paper
capacitors start leaking pretty soon after they are
made. This leakage is slight at first and then gets
worse as the years go on. Even capacitors that have
never been installed often show signs of leakage after
a number of years.

Resistors are much less apt to cause problems, but
they do change values especially when excessive
current has run through them (usually caused by a
defective capacitor). Remember that the original
resistors were usually in the +/- 20 percent range so
they can vary quite a bit and still be in "spec".

proven over time to have reliability problems?
