[Hallicrafters] SX-110 sideband reception

I appreciate all of you bearing with the new guy
here!!

I have been trying to use my new (to me) SX-110 to
receive ham transmissions.  It seems most voice
transmissions are now using sideband.  I have had a
certain amount of luck making these intelligible by
switching to CW and adjusting the BFO pitch control. 
This has just been trial and error (mostly error!).  I
have never been told exactly how to do this method and
am able to clean up only a small percentage of
transmissions.  Can someone give me specifics on using
the BFO method reliably for sideband reception?  Or is
this receiver going to be good for AM and CW only?
