[Hallicrafters] Opinions on the SR 150

The receiver on the SR-150 was very good, but leaves a bit to be desired on CW.
The SR-400 attempted to remedy this, but although the "nose" was sharper, the
shape factor of the curve on CW left something to be desired.

NO! I am not a "Collins person". Collins stuff has its limitations too, but a lot
of Collins people will dispute that! The SR-150 WILL do a good job.

I really enjoyed mine, the only negative being those damned JAICO relays that are
"unobtainium" now. The SR-400 had a slightly better VFO with better calibration
and a few more features, but was more troublesome than the SR-150.

If the 12DQ6 tubes are not pushed to 150 watts on CW, they will last quite a long
time.
I found limiting them to 90-100 watts, they will last forever. (Well...almost!)
I sold it and the SR-400 as they were both "laying around" and I needed funds to get
other "boatanchors"! The SR-400 has been replaced by a Drake "4 line" (T4X-R4A)
which I got for a very good price! There are features about the Drakes I like better
and features that I don't like as well. 99% of my operating is CW and the "4 line"
has 160
meters which I hang around very often!

Your comments are appreciated.

(Looking for a Hallicrafters HA-5!)
| Sandy,
|
| With all due respect, I must disagree with you on some points.
|
| The rx in the SR-150 is very good. The selectivity is quite good and it does
| offer RIT. Now I realize, if you are a Collins guy, everything everyone else
| made is inferior. But then again, the SR-150 was never meant to go head to head
| with some of the high priced Collins transceivers either.
|
| Many owners I talk with frequently have higher output than you indicated. Most
| do have a drop on ten meters, but almost all rigs of that era did.
|
| Many have argued, that the SR-150 is the most reliable, stable and maintenance
| free of all the Hallicrafters transceivers. I can atest to the fact that it is
| indeed the one I hear on the air the most. Those who own and use one, love them.
|
|
| There are many out there, so getting parts is generally not an issue. Unless one
| wants a knob! (grin)
|
| There are many articles written about them and lots of repair tips and
| procedures too.
|
| Dollar for dollar, it is a very good performer. If you can find one in good
| condition, with the matching power supply, and the price is reasonable, go for
| it. Some use a PS by Heathkit instead with good results.
|
| You can hear a number of them on the Sunday HCI 20 meter Net, or on Wednesday
| evenings on the Global Glow. Most notably WA4SOX in FL or K0TNP in TX, among
| others.

|
| The SR-150 is sort of a "poor man's" KWM-2. Readout is only to 5 khz.
| Stability is
| pretty good once it gets warmed up. The PA tubes are 12DQ6's which haven't hit
| the
| roof yet.
| Radio will deliver 90-100 watts on 80 but drops off to 30-40 watts max on 10
| meters.
| Sensitivity is decent, but selectivity isn't adjustable. Biggest shortcoming in
| radio is the relays used in it. Tiny 'JAICO' open relays used and they are
| impossible to find.
| I subbed some reed relays with satisfactory results in one I just sold.

|
| | I have seen a number of SR-150 transceivers for sale lately at cheap prices.
| How
| good were they? How restorable are they? Are most parts still available? What
| were
| the shortcomings of the radio?
