[Hallicrafters] Opinions on the SR 150

Sandy,

With all due respect, I must disagree with you on some points.

The rx in the SR-150 is very good. The selectivity is quite good and it does
offer RIT. Now I realize, if you are a Collins guy, everything everyone else
made is inferior. But then again, the SR-150 was never meant to go head to head
with some of the high priced Collins transceivers either.

Many owners I talk with frequently have higher output than you indicated. Most
do have a drop on ten meters, but almost all rigs of that era did.

Many have argued, that the SR-150 is the most reliable, stable and maintenance
free of all the Hallicrafters transceivers. I can atest to the fact that it is
indeed the one I hear on the air the most. Those who own and use one, love them.

There are many out there, so getting parts is generally not an issue. Unless one
wants a knob! (grin)

There are many articles written about them and lots of repair tips and
procedures too.

Dollar for dollar, it is a very good performer. If you can find one in good
condition, with the matching power supply, and the price is reasonable, go for
it. Some use a PS by Heathkit instead with good results.

You can hear a number of them on the Sunday HCI 20 meter Net, or on Wednesday
evenings on the Global Glow. Most notably WA4SOX in FL or K0TNP in TX, among
others.

The SR-150 is sort of a "poor man's" KWM-2. Readout is only to 5 khz.
Stability is
pretty good once it gets warmed up. The PA tubes are 12DQ6's which haven't hit
the
roof yet.
Radio will deliver 90-100 watts on 80 but drops off to 30-40 watts max on 10
meters.
Sensitivity is decent, but selectivity isn't adjustable. Biggest shortcoming in
radio is the relays used in it. Tiny 'JAICO' open relays used and they are
impossible to find.
I subbed some reed relays with satisfactory results in one I just sold.

| I have seen a number of SR-150 transceivers for sale lately at cheap prices.
How
good were they? How restorable are they? Are most parts still available? What
were
the shortcomings of the radio?
