Andy, your resting plate current at 300-400 ma is way too high...
unless you're running AM.  If so, you need to back waaaay off
on your power, about 25 percent of normal, and then voice peaks
will take you up to rated PEP.  If you are running SSB, check
your bias and get the resting (idle) plate current down to 
a reasonable level.  /Ed  k2mp
