Hi Andy,
I've seen several answers and as mentioned it's a good idea to load slightly
beyond max.*at* the power desired with no more drive than necessary.
I'm not familiar with the 41, but I have several amps that use the 3-500s.
I would think that it would only take about 30 to 50 watts of drive for a
single 3-500, or 3-400, unless they have added some sort of gain limiting to
the circuit, which I don't think was required back then. BUT then again,
the gain in the 3-400 and 3-500 is about 10 db whether you use one or two
tubes.
Other than loading to the full output (unless it has a low voltage tune
position), or over driving, the only other thing I can think of is
parasites.... Check the plate choke for burn spots and make sure the
coupling cap isn't shorted although a shorted coupleing cap in the output is
usually quite evident. Lethal too.
I'd find a oil cooled dummy load and try firing it up into that and see if
it behaves the same way.
Oh...one more possibility is the band switch and parallel capacitance that
is some times switched in to maintain the proper L/C ratio. If you've lost
one of the tank coil taps from the band switch you could end up with some
very high RF voltages.
Good luck
