Why not remove the tube before turning the rx upside down?

When taking measurements under the chassis, and the radio
side up-down, the 5Z3 tube extends beyond the chassis. I
have broken one tube and would like to install a similar but
shorter tube. Could the tube be replaced with a couple of
diodes? If so, would the voltage be higher and the reading
incorrect? Any suggestions will be apreciated.
