Frank,

Yes, by all means replace the 5Z3 with a pair of diodes.  Place a resistor
in series with each diode to drop the voltage to a level similar to that
which you have while using the 5Z3.  That is what I did but I have forgotten
what value resistors I used, probably about 300 ohms or so with at least 5
watts rating.  I selected resistors by trial and error and deliberatly ended
up with a little lower voltage on the DC buss than original just to reduce
overall voltage stress in the radio.

Also, by taking out the 5Z3 you will reduce the load on the power
transformer (the 5 volt winding current) which is a good thing.
