Being a classic car freak also, I have used the lighter version of
automotive rubbing compound, usually called polishing compound. If one
doesn't get too vigorous and rubs using a light, even circular motion
one can polish out light scuffs and restore a luster as long as marks
are not through the paint. I have only done one Halli that way so far
(worked quite well on an SX-96) but it did wonders on one of the
National Cosmic Blue series.
One might practice on a junker or other surface first to get the touch
and motion.
