[Hallicrafters] Tube Sound

Quite a number of years ago I read an article (don't
remember which magazine but was a "major" electronics
type) that compared the "sound" of solid-state versus
tube type amplifiers. Basically they determined that
the difference in sound was caused by the fact that
the solid-state amplifiers proudced even harmonics
(which are normally "harsh" sounding) and the tube
type amplifiers produced odd harmonics which are
pleasing to the ear. In the "real world" (i.e.
musical instruments of orchestras, etc.), it is the
odd harmonics that are normally present and thus is
what we hear "naturally". So, when they are
reproduced by the amplifier we hear what we would
normally hear and not an artifical sound.

Frankly, there are many people who cannot hear any
difference between solid-state and tube type
amplifiers. But, among those who can tell, the vast
majority definitely prefer the sound of the tube.

The jury ruled in favor of tube audio due to (as they
described it) the "air" of a tube.
