[Hallicrafters] Tube Sound

Absolutely true Rick!
I get so tired of hearing the hype about solid state/digital. Years ago I
tore out an article, "Tubes Versus Transistors," from the Audio Engineering
Society magazine titled, "Tube Versus Transistors". What a great objective
lab study of audio comparison. The jury ruled in favor of tube audio due to
(as they described it) the "air" of a tube. The best analogy I can make is
"air" to a tube is like "bouquet" is to wine. Fullness. Rich body.
There will always be those idiots, too, that swear by their solid state amps
all the while connected to crummy, cheezy speakers. Just HOW GOOD could it
sound to them? The fact is, they've never heard great audio like that from
your Bogen or mine coming from my E.H. Scott.
Keep the filaments glowing!

>I agree with most of what you say about the so called tube sound.
>But tube amps do sound different. I mean the old 1960's window
>shakers shure do. I was in the hi fi business for many years and
>all the new name brand hi-fi equiptment sound really good but it is
>maybe too clean, i don't know?? I am listing to an old bogen right now
>and it really is more mellow, not much high end. Tube power amps will

>distorting. Anybody with a ham tube linear has done it. The sound is
>more pleasing to some and just different. But i agree just adding a
>tube is not going to cut it. The whole amplifier chain has to be tube,
> to get that sound , sorry. Or with computer smmpling it can be had.
>And tube keep you warm on these cold winter nites.
>enough from this old fart.
