[Hallicrafters] re: My two cents worth

I have been collecting Hallicrafters radios for almost a year now, previous to that I was collecting railroadiana (railroad items). In both cases I would watch and buy on that internet auction site. I feel that ePay has totally destroyed the collecting world in terms of inflating prices etc. Something that would sell at a Hamfest one year ago has now doubled thanks to ePay. Oh sure, it's great if you're a seller looking to make an inflated profit, but for us collectors it's pathetic. You bid on an item and wonder how many flunkies are "bidding up" the item for their seller friend. I watched one auction a few weeks ago, where a common Hallicrafters radio was cranked up to ten times its actual value. I took a look at the bidding history and was surprised to see that three quarters of the bidders had absolutely no feedback whatsoever and the ePay names of the bidders had the funniest names, as if one person had made them all up himself. No, I have no faith in ePay, nor will I ever buy another radio through that sight. Too bad every collector couldn't just "stay away" from there and let our wonderful hobby thrive on its own. Another thing to consider when bidding on a radio on ePay is that the seller really doesn't have a clue on how to pack your rig and probably really doesn't care if it arrives safely at your home. After all he will tell you go after the shipper if there is any damage in transit. Oh I've been down that road before. My advice is to check out the HCI site for the want ads etc. These members wont burn you, ePay just might though. I've said enough, these are just my thoughts. Happy hunting, Mike in Sarnia.
