[Hallicrafters] Sizing of Electrolytics

Jim,
The only size concern would be on the input to the filter. I assume the
S40A has the standard circuit with a capacitor on both the input and output
sides of the filter choke. A larger capacitor on the input side (on the
line from the rectifier to the filter choke) will increase the B+ and the
peak current through the rectifier and transformer. The latter is the more
important as this will heat both the rectifier and the power transformer
more than the original design. If the circuit uses a 10 on the input side
I would replace this with the same or a close value to avoid excessive
heating (a lot of the hallicrafters have hot running power transformers
anyway so it is better not to add more thermal stress). You could still
use your 40-40-40 can and use a little cap from mouser under the chassis
instead of connecting the 40 uf section. I presume the other 10 section is
probably the cathode bypass for the output tube and the 40 will not be a
problem here.
