I feel that using a digital meter to troubleshoot boatanchors (except for 
checking resistor values) will cause one more trouble.  State of the art 
servicing back in those days was dine with analog meters and all the service 
manual voltage charts were derived from analog meter readings.  Also many 
digital meters will not give an instantenous reading which may be required in 
some cases as has been pointed out already.

A good example of this is trying to measure filament voltage on a pair if 
3-500zs after installing step start protection. By the time the digital meter 
got settled down, the step start had already kicked in and it was impossible 
to read the initial filament voltage. The little Triplett 310 was right there 
with the correct answer.
