I have done an SX-71 the way you describe. The only difference was that I
used white transfer letters off of a transfer sheet. I was able to match
the lettering very closely, both in size and script. It didn't cost hardly
anything but the problem is that "half timers" disease, I can't remember
where I got the transfer sheets. Maybe somebody out there knows a good
source for them.

The obvious places are an office supply place or off of the web.

Anyway, the process was as you describe, feathering into things that should
remain and then painting. When THOROUGHLY dry, then the transfer letters
are rubbed on followed by a spray coat of either satin finish or flat finish
clear paint (it helps keep everything in place - I think I used a clear
Krylon satin maybe).

If one is really careful with rubbing the letters on, it becomes almost
un-noticeable.

Good luck in whatever you do.
