[Hallicrafters] Stripping paint

Hello
I'm getting ready to "de-rust" and strip the paint from the lift up lid of
the SX-71. For those not familiar with it, this lid is hinged and has a
gazillion very small vent holes (guess you could call it a "Holy Lid" ;-).

Anyway, reading the label on the bottle of Naval Jelly (level 3 for extreme
rust removal) it says not to get it on paint as it removes paint.

Question: Since I want to remove both the paint and rust it 'looks' like
this might be a one step process with the Naval Jelly. and may do better at
getting in the holes etc than bead blasting would. Anybody have any
experience with doing it this way? I was told that MEK would remove the
paint (outdoors) but would probably require the purchase of both a very
large pan and a significant amount of MEK to thoroughly soak the lid.
Budget for this project is quite limited (could say almost non existant).
