[Hallicrafters] S-76 S-Meter Problem

My S-76 S-meter is a beauty,   measuring about 4"x 6" with one heck of a long 
needle. <G>  BUT when I tune quickly  across loud signals, the swing of the 
needle and its momentum sometimes  carry it  down below zero and it gets 
stuck there, requiring some extended banging to free it up again.  

Seems that  I might be able to   slow down its response (movement)   by 
changing  the circuit time constant ( meter? or avc?) ....but not sure how to 
do that.  Any suggestions?  Ive not replaced many of the old  caps or 
resistors  so they may have changed value on me.  

Has anyone run into this  problem before?
