Folks,

The Amber alert system has really proved effective, Apparently saving lives
weeks after its deployment. Somebody, perhaps the ARRL, should organize a
few bright bulbs to develop an interface between the AMBER alert system and
ham radio repeaters. This would deploy tens of thousands of more eyes on
the road, to be on the lookout for kidnapped children, or whatever the
target of the Amber Alert was. Expand the use to Homeland Defense....If the
FBI or other Homeland Defense Agencies spot or know of terrorists in a given
area, they could use the AMBER system to alert appropriate regions, and
quickly put many eyes on the alert. If the ARRL became an organization
assigned to be 'hub' for information to distribute, and had an email list of
ARRL members, or non members who were hams, they could email text files, or
even voice announcements to them. Especially if regionally indexed by zip
codes. Repeater owners could build an interface to the Web, if the repeater
was connected to the web, say for Echolink operations, that connection, and
perhaps even the Echolink system, could be used to rapidly distribute AMBER,
or similar announcements.

What say, guys?
