I am interested in your 28 ASR
can you supply me with some details- 
Can you send photos ? 
I am looking for a 28ASR with a typing reperforator, but will take one with a typing perforator if that is what it has.  
In the latter case do you have a standalone typing reperforator with 60 wpm gears ?
I hear some people have either a mechanical switch or an electronic switch to change speeds. That would be great as well.
I would like 100 wpm gears also.

Hello Eugene.. Well I know what your saying about ascii conversion etc..
I read the documents that are with the program and he describes it as
simply getting the TTY loop converted to RS232 for the computer is all..
The program has many selections in the setup to select Baudot and different
setting for it..

At one point he says just connect after setting it up and type on the TTY
and it will show up in the monitor screen of the computer.. The capture
side shows the data being recieved and then stored, it looks like it's
working there..
But nothing but garbage all over the monitor screen..  So am curious what I

I have had some success with this program.. I realized later that the TTL
signal I was sampling was inverted so once I got that straightened out the
program was copying the
TTY signal, mostly.. The only issue I have is that the cursor isnt always a
straight line but more a thick black block like you see in a text program
with the INSERT key on your
keyboard selected.. This black block overwrites the TTY character at the
time and does make a mess of things.. Sometimes its ok and its all good. I
suspect its a computer issue and I was able to capture and save a simple
pix I had from a perf tape.. I was able to load it in the editor section of
the program and it looked good.. I sent it out on the autostart feed and it
went through just fine..
So it seems to work mostly.. Just a report.. Skip

Several have figured out the project. The RY's are generated by sending
a square wave using a 555. The 555 then drives an HSR series optical
switch which keys the local loop. Dovetron does a similar operation with
their RY generator. There are plenty of Chink 555 boards on ePay that
are all ready built and cost is around 2 bucks.

That IS pretty clever! I assume the printer has auto CRLF since the
generator would only generate RY. Also, all bits would be the same length,
including the stop bit which, for 60 wpm is usually 31 ms long compared to
22 ms for the other bits. But, if we are sampling in the middle of the
bit, it seems like any stop bit longer than 11 ms would work. Thinking
about the square wave, I get

0 - start
1 - D0
0 - D1
1 - D2
0 - D3
1 - D4
0 - stop

So, it seems like we'd get framing errors on a square wave since the stop
bit is a 0.

I cant see how a square wave would work.
If you listen to an off-air RY signal it has rhythmical brrr, brrr, brrr
but a square wave wouldn't have the rhythmical breaks that make the stop
bits.

There was an article for an RY generator by W7ZTC in the March 71 issue
of Ham Radio.
It used some really old RTL chips MC-890-P and MC-824-P.
Maybe someone could redesign the circuit using standard LS TTL or CD4000
series chips.

Seems that the Arduino could be coded to do that and have the 31 ms stop bit.  Most any speed could be set and the cr/lf added after a set number of characters.

Good analysis! I agree that the "framing error" results in the shaft
continuing to rotate and go onto the next character. With a valid
character, I'd EXPECT (but do not know) that the shaft would stop rotating
11 ms into the stop bit (center of a 22 ms bit time, even though the stop
is usually 31 ms long). If there is an invalid stop bit (space), it would
"roll into" the next character with the start bit starting 11 ms after the
end of D4. It would then sample D0 33 ms later (22 ms for start bit and 11
ms to center in D0).

The software UART (
https://github.com/HaroldHallikainen/DSP_TU/blob/master/src/BaudotUart.c )
in my DSP TU (https://w6iwi.org/rtty/DspTU/ ). Detects the mark to space
transition for the beginning of the start bit and checks it again 11 ms
later to make sure it was a good start. If so, it then samples the input
every 22 ms to pick up the data bits. After the last data bit, it samples
another 22 ms later for the middle of the stop bit. If the stop bit is not
mark, it increments an error counter. I'm planning on reporting a ROUGH
error rate by comparing bad stop bits to good start bits.

By the way, I've started assembly of the DSP TU PCB (
https://w6iwi.org/rtty/DspTU2/ ). After soldering a few 0603 resistors
with a soldering iron, I ordered a hot air solder station and solder
paste. That should be here Monday.

A side benefit of my 400 Hz power supply is that the frequency is
adjustable. So, I adjusted the frequency to 360 Hz and voila! Now I can
print at 45 baud!

That's great! My brother has a machine shop with a lot of variable
frequency drives that are single phase in and three phase out. I've always
wondered if they would drive a single phase load (a Teletype). They are
amazingly cheap.

I live about 1.5 miles from All Electronics and have been in there quite a few times. Several of months ago I noticed that all of the "Not for Sale" old test equipment was no longer there. Recent reports from around here first said that they were looking for a buyer with no luck but were possibly negotiating with employees to buy it but not successfully so far. A couple of days ago I heard that there might be some arrangement finally made with employees. We will see.
While in high school (1960) I used to work Sundays at Thrifty Electronics also in Van Nuys on Burbank Blvd. selling tubes, lots of surplus capacitors, and resistors as well as other small parts. Al Ex's (the big boss) cigars were gross and I had to wash off that smell when I finished the day.

I remember getting printed catalogs from All Electronics (I assume it was
the same company). It does seem like a difficult business to be in.
Determining what to price stuff at and how much to pay for the stuff is a
challenge. And, if you are going to sort stuff, write descriptions, take
photographs for a printed catalog or a web page... even more work! But I
do like "saving stuff from the dumpster."

There was an interesting store in Indiana we found while visiting my
sister-in-law. The store bought truckloads of surplus (appears to be
mostly retail returns). On Wednesday, everything in the store was $5.
Then, each day, the price was marked down a dollar. I imagine there was
some stuff they could not even give away at the end, and I don't know what
they did with that. But, this "reverse" or Dutch auction has always been
interesting to me. I've sold several things on Craigs list that way.

Some more OT nostalgia; How about "Sandy's" I think it was in the San
Fernando Valley, Canoga Park on Saticoy, does anyone remember Saydy's? I
was just a wee youngin', before the advent of Radio Shack. Good times
with my Dad on Saturday outings.

There was one in Canoga Park on Saticoy as you remember and one very near to me on the southeast corner of Coldwater and Vanowen in North Hollywood (now an Armenian bakery).?
There is still Apex Electronics on San Fernando Road and near Lankershim in Sun Valley that has all kinds of things - parts and old electronic racks which are rented out to television and movie companies as props with only the lights flashing. That is a giant mess inside and a few employees or owners seem to know where everything is. It's amazing what they have in drawers and boxes in maybe 30-40 thousand square feet of space. A couple of months ago I went there to hopefully get 2 #4 ga insulated or uninsulated butt end connectors. It took someone all of maybe 15 seconds to come up with them at 50 cents each. Wire, tubes, mechanical things . . . it's always a surprise that they have it and a lot more.

It appears no-one is interested in coming to Western Kansas for the Model 28ASR,
and boxes/rolls of paper and tape. Have had NO responses whatsoever. Next step
will be to have salvage yard pick it up, Will get a few bux for it, they said can strip it of
wiring and motor and scrap the steel. Then take the paper to the land fill. I'll hold
off for a while before I take those measures. I really hate to do that. I have a lot
of other stuff to dispose of also, mil gear, ARC-5. etc, most going to auction or scrap
yard.
