You may be thinking of the lines leased by PT&T to Federal Telegraph
and Radio during WW-1 Federal had a small but very successful radio
telegraph service along the pacific coast. When all wireless stations
were taken over by the U.S. government during WW-1 Federal continued the
service via wire lines leased from Pacific Telephone and Telegraph.
Federal eventually got out of the telegraph business. Their claim to
fame was that they sold 15 words for the same price as WU sold 10 words.
Federals main importance was in developing and perfecting the
Poulsen arc. They equipped the U.S. Navy's international wireless
network with these arc transmitters, which were continuous wave and
replaced the damped wave spark units previously used. Federal later
became a part of ITT.
