[GreenKeys] Where was the "Telegraph" in AT&T?

I thought this might have an answer for you, but it mentions nothing of telegraph other than in name. That may be an answer in itself; seems telegraph peaked in the 1870s.
For what its worth, it was a BILLION dollar venture, in 1934. They reported 13,458,000 telephones under ma bell/At&t in 34, with just under 17,000,000 telephones total in the US.
