This is an old technique used for typewriters. Kerosene with a
little oil in it. Typewriters were also cleaned by soaking in various
solvents. One must be careful to use solvents that do not attack
plastics or other materials used in the machines. If you search for
repair information about typewriters you will find a good deal on
cleaning them. Have a look at:

A lot of this should be applicable to teleprinters.
