[GreenKeys] Unwanted help from stuntbox?

Hi Paul:

This is a stuntbox issue. Your machine has horizontal tab and either vertical
tab or form-out. When the right code combo comes down the line, it does its
thing. Easiest way to disable this is to find the offending function pawls and
lift them out of engagement with their associated function bars. No disassembly
of the machine is required.

Remove the typing unit from its base and put it on a table or bench. Turn the
typing unit around so you are looking at it from the rear. Look closely at the
stuntbox and note that some of the slots are numbered. Starting at the left side
(closest to the selector magnet) you will see slot number 1. I don't remember if
every fifth or tenth slot is numbered but you will see numbers running from left
to right. The highest numbered slot is 42. The horizontal tabulation feature is
triggered by a function bar in slot 17. The vertical tabulation or form-out
feature is triggered by a function bar in slot 41 or 42.

When a function bar is selected (by reception of the proper code by the selector
magnet) it will move forward and its associated function pawl will engage the rear
end of the function bar. As the function bail moves the function bar out of
engagement with the code bars, it will operate its associated function pawl which
will operate its associated function lever. The movement of the function lever
will cause the typing unit to line-feed, carriage return, unshift-on-space, go to
figures or letters, ring the bell, or do a vertical tabulation or a horizontal
tabulation or whatever else it is supposed to do.

While the cleanest way to disable certain stuntbox functions is to remove the
appropriate function bar, function pawl and function lever along with the associated
springs, an easier alternative is available. The function pawl associated with
the undesired action can simply be lifted up a slight distance and held in that
position. The lifted up function pawl cannot engage with the function bar and
the undesired action will not occur. Here's how you do it:

When we talk of function pawls in the stuntbox, you will need to identify them.
Look for part number 152653 in the parts book. That's what a function pawl looks
like. Now look for part number 157274. It's called a clip. In the parts book it
is shown upside down. The short, bent legs of the 157274 clip hook over the 150544
rail. The U-shaped portion of the clip lifts the rear end of the 152653 pawl out
of engagement with its associated function bar.and makes it impossible for the
function bar to initiate any activity on the printer. The 157274 clip can be
fashioned from a paper clip. Alternately, I've seen the function pawl held up by
string, thread, wire etc.

The horizontal tab function is triggered from a function bar in stuntbox slot 17.
Install the 157274 functional equivalent (that you made) so as to lift the 152653
function pawl out of engagement with its associated function bar. This may require
some adjustment - go ahead, you have plenty of paper clips. The clip does not have
to lift the pawl up as high as it will go. It only has to keep it high enough so
that the rear end of the function bar cannot engage the 152653 function pawl. Again,
the short, bent legs of the 157274 clip hook onto the 150544 rail while the U-shaped
portion of the clip goes under the 152653 pawl and lifts it clear of the tail end of
the function bar.

Do the same thing with the function pawl in slot 41 or 42. This will keep it from
doing unwanted line-feeds.

I'll be glad to answer any questions. A picture or two would be helpful it the above
does not work or there is some sort of glitch.

Good luck with your project.

Jerry Murphy
