1 - When horizontal tabulation is triggered, the typing unit will space until
it is tripped off by a tab on the right hand spacing drum. The tabs can be
placed wherever the user wants them. There can be one tab or several. The
sending TTY (assuming it is an ASR set) would be equipped with a switch on
the tabulation mechanism that would open the transmitter-distributor's control
magnet and stop the TD until tabulation has been completed. There would need
to be 2 or 3 throwaway characters (non printing) inserted right after the
horizontal tab control code to keep from generating a garble. The operator
would need to insert the throwaway characters. Mod kits were also available
to provide TD control switches for vertical tabulation and form out.
2 - Model 28 stuntboxes could be programmed to decode sequential characters.
The characters would have to be a fixed sequence and the length and number of
the sequential characters would be limited by the amount of free space in the
stuntbox.
