Goofy story - when I lived in China… those couple of years that I did, recyclers paid you to recycle your stuff ;p . it was a real win situation for me - as opposed to having to pay someone here for recycling ;o . Go figure :( ~

I got a bunch of VoIP phones from a friend that way, whose employer had upgraded their phone system. On my query about whether this was really OK, my friend said, "Now I don't have to pay an electronics recycler to take those away."

If they must dispose of the stuff as trash perhaps you can offer to collect the trash at a discount to them. Ask what it will cost them for disposal and then offer to show up with trucks and labor for a substantial discount. Not zero, beancounters do not understand zero. If you are good at fast talking perhaps you can save the gear and make a little something into the bargain.
