Another tack to take these days is perhaps you'll be saving them the 
money to have a recycler haul it away.  I got a bunch of VoIP phones 
from a friend that way, whose employer had upgraded their phone system. 
On my query about whether this was really OK, my friend said, "Now I 
don't have to pay an electronics recycler to take those away."

FWIW, YMMV.
